The intensive animal production in big units has increased the need for prevention and treatment of diarrhea in calves. Enterotoxigenic E.Coli and Salmonella are often isolated as the pathogens causing the problems. Nature has many defense-mechanisms, which we can utilize if we only learn more about their potentials and limitations. This system has been in action for centuries in natural extensive animal "production" thinking about the suckling calves in outdoor housing/grazing conditions.
In modem animal production we limit our animals to a selection of feed materials; to those we can offer economically. If we feed growth promoters/chemotherapeutics we don't consider what harm these might do to the beneficial lactobacilli and streptococci.
