Lactoferrin, more than a simple protein! Lactoferrin is an iron binding glycoprotein. We find it in the cow milk, but it is a prominent component of all mucosal secretions and it can be detected in almost all body fluids. This molecule with 77 000 Dalton as molecular weight, has a very high affinity to iron and its ability to bind iron. Naturally present in all our liquid secretion, lactoferrin is considered a multifunctional or multi-tasking protein. The scientific community continue to research, develop and explain lactoferrin and the biological properties.

Most of the biological functions of LF are related to the importance of iron. Lactoferrin has a very high affinity to iron. Evidence shows that lactoferrin has a function in the primary defence system. Various reported biological functions attributed to lactoferrin are summarized as follows :
- Antimicrobial, antiviral and antiparasitic activities
- Regulation of intestinal iron absorption
- Growth stimulation of various cell lines
- Modulation of the inflammatory-immune response
- Antioxidant activity (To stop Haber-Weis reaction)
Biopole works every day on the lactoferrin properties to implement them in final products.
